A 4-Wheel Drive Hybrid Scooter, an Active Senior’s Adventure

Here we have a hybrid mobility scooter equipped with an array of options that allow the user to adjust their ride for wet roads, grocery runs, or family rides. The 500W motor-powered scooter weighs in at 82kg and is 220cm long by 82cm wide. On the storage compartment behind the seat, there is room for three full shopping bags or two child seats. When pinched for time, the user can choose to increase the scooter’s max speed to either 20, 25, or 32km/h. The hybrid scooter can also be configured from rear-wheel drive to 4-wheel-drive with the help of each wheel’s controller, motor, and power settings.

The scooter’s range is 80km on a full battery (which takes three hours to fully charge) and the battery’s storage capacity is 1.8kWh. If a second battery is added, the range is nearly doubled to 150km while the storage capacity is increased to 3.3kWh. Pedals can be utilized to assist the rear wheels or charge the batteries via an electric generator, further extending the scooter’s range.

LCD screens and controls are conveniently located on the handlebars alongside power-setting buttons, brake levers, and throttles for each wheel; any of these can be operated in conjunction or individually. And, If any single button, lever, or throttle is applied, the side pull is hardly noticeable due to the scooter’s long wheelbase. The upper LCDs are for the rear wheels, while the lower screens represent the front wheels.

The removable roof is made up of several thin 60cm long plexiglass sheets which can be added to the vehicle for weather protection. The plexiglass is hinged on the roof frame for easy rooftop stowage with the help of elastomeric strips.

After testing the emobility device, it does very well on the roads. The double pushrod steering is very precise, more stable than my three-wheelers. It rides seamlessly on pathways with no problem at all.
